Trademarks and legal

What is the difference between owning a logo and registering it?

The short answer

Owning it means the design is your property and you can use it anywhere. Registering it gives you the legal standing to stop somebody else using something confusingly similar. Most small businesses start with the first and add the second once they are trading seriously.

The longer answer

Owning is about the artwork. Copyright arrives with the design and is assigned to you by us, and it means nobody can copy the drawing itself.

Registering is about the market. A trademark is a right in a name or mark for a class of goods and services, and it is what stops a competitor trading under something confusingly similar even if they drew their own version. Most businesses need the first. Businesses in competitive or franchised categories usually want both.
